Interviews are curated by Ellie Van Der Laan, who graduated with a degree in journalism from WMU in 2022, the same year she created The Void.

Interviews are filmed by Zola Crow, who graduated from WMU with a degree in film and Spanish in 2023.

Laliberté | Void Live Set

LaLiberté is based out of Chicago, this is their live set in Kalamazoo played on December 13th, 2025. Vox/Rhythm Guitar- Sunny Betz Lead Guitar- Matthew Hocutt Bass- Shaye Rosengarden Drums- Samara Savine This set was filmed by Tyler Josephine Berg at Glow Hall, a venue in kzoo which is owned and ran by Chris Keener.

Cranky | Void Interview

Cranky is a four piece band based in Kalamazoo Michigan. Their music is high energy, colorful and abrasive. Their latest release was an EP called Everything No Worries. Cranky's members include Dan Riehl (drums), Jon (guitar) and Laura Sacha (Vocals) and Rory (bass). This interview is with Jon and Laura. We talk about their new release, their histories in the Kalamazoo music scene, and how the DIY scene can advocate for more direct action in Kalamazoo and beyond!

Saturdays At Your Place | Void Interview

Saturdays At Your Place got their start in the Kalamazoo DIY scene. They started playing house shows in 2022 and now tour around the world. Esden Stafne is the bassist of SAYP. We talk about their connection to the Kalamazoo DIY scene, their early days touring, their previous record label and current distributor, etc.

Void Fundraiser | Void Live Set

This is a documentation of the Void Zine Drop 4. Shot on a handycam and a little all over the place, but this is the first documentation of what one of these Void events feel like. This is the first time I ever used this camera, and so it documents discoveries like finding out about night vision and being unable to zoom out once zooming in. (Hence the close up of Celeste and Shai-Li in the final screen). It's dorky and lovable and authentic which is very true to how Void spaces feel. First performance was Prismer, the second was Shai-Li, the third was poet Zoey Rayes, and the final performer was Celeste with support from Shai-Li.

Vida Eterna | Void Live Set

Kalamashoegazer is the longest running showcase/dreampop festival in the US. This is it's 16 year anniversary. The festival is ran by April Zimont (tambourine and vocals), her husband Adam Zimont (drums) and her brother Mark Morris.

Celeste Alison | Void Interview

Celeste Alison is a Kalamazoo native and an intuitive musician. She got her start playing drums at KAR (Kalamazoo Academy of Rock). She describes her music as lesbian pop and is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. Celeste Alison is releasing an EP called Ghost Lore and performing the release show at Bells September 13th, 2025. The EP and the performance is dedicated to her band member who passed away, Jarod Knuth.

Paperback Shots | Void Interview

Paperback Shots is a bookclub based in Kalamazoo.   / paperbackshots   This interview is with Mo (left) and Dev (right) are two members of Paperback Shots. To join their meetups dm them on instagram and ask to join the bookclub group chat. There, you will find information on what they are reading and where they are meeting up. Anyone is encouraged to participate!

Micah Sweezie | Void Interview

Micah Sweezie is a ceramicist in Kalamazoo. They talk about their experience traveling to a ceramics village in Vietnam and how their heritage influences/informs their creative process.

Headband Henny | Void Interview

Headband Henny is an rnb and hip hop artist residing in Kalamazoo, MI. He's got a new EP called Taking Me Back, and is releasing new music next Wednesday July 2nd, 2025. We talk about how he got his start in music, his song making process, his producers and collaborators as well as his new material. As well as Spiderman 3, Musashi and Jeffery Lance Lillard.

Santino Jones | Void Interview

Santino Jones is a rapper and hip hop artist who grew up in Kalamazoo.

Davy | Void Interview

Davey is a painter and a producer. In this interview, we talk about how his two creative worlds collide and how creating helped him through the darkest time in his life. He has released an EP called Here to Stay. We address the significance of that release and the emotions tied into it. 

Satsuma | Void Interview

Satsuma is a screamo band based in Kalamazoo, MI, comprised of Con McP, Dan Riehl, Matt Jett and James (Jimbo) Bruce. The band released their debut album This is my Outside Voice on April 28th and play an album release show at TV Station April 12th.

Mark Mathews | Void Interview

Mark Mathews is a writer and poet. He is the owner of Flush Promotions, a publishing company, and non-profit KEEP PACE. He has recently released Triple Threat Love Letter a written, audio and video experience that documents his life from 2015-2025. Our discussions focus on mental health, and creating as a means to constructively deal with emotions.

Shai-Li Void | Void Interview

Shai-Li is a multi-instrumentalist. She describes her music as blending indie, neo-soul, rnb, folk and pop. We talk about her being an intuitive player, her songwriting process, and creating as a constructive means to deal with intense emotions. We talk about how she worked through a four year creative block by reconnecting with her inner child.

Alix Heffron released an album called The Moon is Looking at Me. It's available on Bandcamp, Spotify, and Apple Music. We talk about what's gone into making it, the storyline behind it and what it's like to be an artist who makes things just for themselves.
Micah Dailey-White | Void Interview
Micah Dailey-white is a comedian on Tiktok and a musician/producer who lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Please enjoy this vulnerable story from this lovable kind-hearted person who has no choice but to be himself.
Jordan Hamilton | Void Interview
Jordan Hamilton is a cellist from Maryland and has been living in Kalamazoo for 9 years. He studied cello performance at Western Michigan University. We talk about his latest album Project Freedom and some of the other projects/releases he has been a part of. 

Fake Baseball | Void Interview

This is an interview with Maggie Heeren, who is a recording engineer at La Luna and a the guitarist and lead singer of Fake Baseball. We talk about the band's background but  focus on their new single Sign 'em, which was released June 12th, 2024.
